March 22-24, 2012 Chalmette, La. Crawfish Festival

When the captain's dinner kicked off for the first event of the tour there weren't many people talking about the eventual winners as overwhelming favorites but it didn't take long for the field to realize that the #14 boat of Sean O'Connell and Eddie Adams were going to have to be "dealt' with this year. After event 1, it's obvious, these guys make a great team and have now, quickly become a team that must be considered as a favorite as the season moves forward. All these anglers are so good you have to do everything right to take one of these events, we just got lucky this weekend, was the statement of Eddie Adams but a sentiment shared by both anglers on this team.  It was a tremendous weekend that had a little bit of "everything" and there will be much more coming on this as soon as we can catch our breath and recount all the ups and downs of one of the best tournaments, ever, in HT Series history... As the sun sets on the first official tour event of the 2012 Academy Sports + Outdoors HT Professional Redfish Series it is almost beyond words all that took place the 3rd weekend in March.  From the captain's meeting and dinner hosted by the St. Bernard Parish Tourism Council till the final fish was weighed this one had it all. Late Tuesday afternoon just prior to the captain's meeting the word came down that the locks would be closed and the launch site would have to be moved from Gulf Outlet Marina to a location south of the locks.  Step in Karen and Glenn from Brenton Sound Marina and catastrophe averted. The anglers would launch closer to their fishing waters and for that they were grateful, however this meant a lot more distance for film crew, staff and volunteers to negotiate each of the mornings for this 3 day extravaganza.  The curve balls continued to be hurled at the anglers as high winds, rain, lightening and the potential for very severe weather would accompany them each of the first 2 days of competition.  The second day, Friday, the launch was forced to be delayed until 10:00 am.  Each team would have the opportunity to make up for some of the lost time by having their return to dock time moved from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.   This adjustment in time was greeted with a common acceptance among the teams and the weights would reveal why. The heaviest weight of the first two days came at Friday's weigh in and it was obvious, the marsh and bayou would be willing to give up their bounty for the HT anglers this day. The #31 Majek boat of Dwayne Eschete and Clark Jordan weighed in a massive 17.01 pounds on day 2.  Other teams brought in 16.80, 16.58, 16.48, 16.38 one after another, the heavy bags continued and were automatically weighed and recorded on the HT3 Outdoors fully automated weigh in system.  Wow what a day of fishing we had, stated South Carolina anglers, Jamie Hough and Ronnie Pitts, fishing in the #22 Natural Light boat.  Other teams talked of a change in the pattern, from large amounts of bites that characterized Thursdays action to bites, few and far between on Friday.  However, the bites were supplied by a lot bigger fish on day 2 of this 3 day competition. It was quality over quantity today, American Rodsmiths pro, Kevin Broussard told the crowd, not as many bites but the bites were much better today, he continued.  Many anglers knowing they needed a large weight to make the final cut to the top 10 teams in order to fish on Saturday for all the marbles, pushed the envelope and brought in fish that had to be refused.  3 fish were just over the 27" line of measurement and 1 fish had the tip of it's tail missing and according to the rules, had to be released without being weighed. The top team for this weekend took home $25,000.00 and 200 points toward team of the year while second place went to the #31 Majek of Dwayne Eschete and Clark Jordan, netting them $12,000.00 and 199  points toward team of the year.  Third place taking home $7,000.00 and 198 points went to the #21 Mosaic Inc boat of David Crews and Mark Sepe, fourth was last year's Crawfish Festival winners, Jeff Steckler and Jimmy Lloydfishing out of the #1 SCB boat, $5,000.00 and 197 points was their take.  The top 5 finished out with the American Rodsmith's #69 boat of Kevin and Phil Broussard, netting them $5,000.00 and 196 valuable points toward the team of the year award. The Stiffy Push Pole big bag of the tournament prize went to the winning team of Sean O'connell and Eddie Adams with their day 3 big bag of 17.06 pounds.  A nice $500.00 bonus was handed to them by Stiffy Push Pole pro and owner, Kevin Shaw.  These guys did a great job and it's a pleasure to hand them the check, stated Shaw.  Finally and once again from Stiffy Push Poles, the first team out of the cut in the #22 Frontline Plus boat, Mike Lambert and Blake Champion took home a new Stiffy modular push pole, valued at $600.00, another prize offered by a great company that makes a great product.  Please visit their website at www.stiffypushpoles.com. Thank you to the anglers, the sponsors, the tourism council and all the great fans that showed up to support the anglers of the 2012 Academy Sports + Outdoors HT Professional Redfish Series.  A special thanks goes out to our great staff at HT3 Outdoors, Chris Tumey, Vic Burgess, Peyton Tumey, Lawson Tumey and John Tumey all do a great job in assisting the tour in turning a redfish tournament into a Head Turning event.  Also, to Alex and Ben for shooting all the great video we say thank you. Until next time, here's wishing health, happiness and tight lines and big reds until I see you again... on the water or on the web... ~Pat Malone (read more...)

Wind Creek State Park, Alexander City, AL- February 11, 2012

Rooker/Foster Wind Creek State Park, Alexander City, AL- February 11, 2012 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend series event on Lake Martin was the first tournament of the year for the two freshwater pros. Cold water and strong 30+ mph winds made for a tough event for the entire field of 90 boats, however Bobby Foster and Todd Rooker turned in respectable finishes of 21st with 9.71 and 4th with 13.28. While finding a variety of ways to catch the prespawn bass, a crankbait and spinnerbait were the lures of choice for quality bass while also using a finesse jig and jerkbait to help finish their limits. Both anglers are in good shape heading into the next event on Lay Lake March 10th. http://www.americanbassanglers.com/BWS/newsdetails.php?news_id=632 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (read more...)
